Just finished my re print of my first CNC using all leftover 3D printer parts (minus the GRBL shield) from my numerous printers over the years, and of course, 3D printed. The first one was pretty rough and printed in resin on my photon, but after realizing how terrible of an idea that was, I re designed it and beefed it up. CNC machines normally take less time to install whereas the X-carve takes a little longer to install due to its add-ons. Mostly printed CNC machines are a little cheaper as they do not have the facility to use add ons. Building a 3D printed CNC router should only be done if you can't afford any other option. Now, that's different than having a few 3D printed parts. The PrintNC is a 95% steel router, that uses some 3D printed parts for connections. A lot of people will build the machine, and then replace them printed parts with Aluminum ones they make themselves.
I've had success using ABS for machine tooling and lightweight CNC builds. It holds up better than PLA at the kinds of temperatures stepper motors get to. But more of a bugger to print as an ambient temp of ~30oC while printing helps stop warping. Alternatively, you may get away with PETG. But I've not built anything with it yet.The big machined parts should just about fit on a 25x25 cm bed . so you can print the first iteration and then use the 3d printed machine to machine aluminum versions.
