Filling holes with gasless wire isn't going to help. My normal technique is to build up the edges by tacking tiny bits of weld all around the edge. Then start to bring the hole inwards a little by slightly longer duration welds around the edges. Finally melt everything into place with a very long duration weld in the middle to fill in the gap.
