I use a scrap wood backing on it bigger than the hole so I can secure it in place with screws. . Then use some joint compound or spackle to repair it. . I didn't mention the option of using a junction box because it would have to be accessible and a visible junction . If the fittings are loose, tighten them, then very carefully move the fixture back-and-forth slightly, watching the electrical box as you do this. If the box still moves, then the box is loose and must be tightened. If the box doesn't move, replace the canopy. Detach the fixture from the electrical box by removing the fittings.
