I too was looking for a high gain distortion pedal for prog metal (Dream Theater, Symphony X, etc), and since I can't justify a Mesa Boogie Mark V, i stumbled upon the Mesa Throttle Box. .Take one out and turn the other up slightly, turn the distortion on your amp up slightly. Use your eq pedal and set the range to favor higher levels for the upper register. Turn your mid knob (s) .Trying to get a "metal" tone with distortion just results in lots of fizz. The Suhr Riot is remarkable, and it does amazing things even on a clean channel. Check it out. The absolute best pedal .
Just got a Xvive Golden Brownie.JCM 800 in a stomp box and only 60 bucks on zzsounds.com. I'm not a stomp box guy, but I'm sold on this one. The Overrated Special is hard to beat in my .My favorite all around tone is an Xotic Compressor into EQD Westwood into Fender Full Moon Distortion into Swollen Pickle Fuzz. Gives me a heavy thrash type tone with just enough fuzzy .There are (good) recommendations here for more than distortion pedals. All of the recommendations fit into a category of “gain” pedals. Within that, there are boost, overdrive .
