Hi all, new hobbyist here. I have seen some threads on how to remove the Quick change gear box but I am still puzzled. I see that there are 3 screws that hold the gear box to the ways but one of the screws is part way under the head stock and I'm not sure how to go about getting it out via removing the head stock.Definitely concerned about it breaking or not working right out of the box, have had mixed experience with HF power tools and machines but just can't justify the k+ price tag on usdd full size lathes for just starting out. The only complication with replacing them is that the bronze bushing in the center of the gear box, needs to be machined to a specific length so that there is 0.004" clearance between the edge of the bushing and the gears on the shaft next to it. And to machine that bushing to a specific length, you need to have a running lathe to make a facing .
But if you're just doing small parts you could get away with a 7x12 and spend the money left over on accessories and upgrades like a 4 jaw and so on.
